The Valley School trails in Bangalore have become a cherished photography destination for me, with every visit revealing something new and remarkable. Even after numerous expeditions, the place retains a sense of wonder—each morning here feels fresh, filled with the anticipation of what the woods might unveil.
It often begins with the melodious calls of the White-rumped Shama, a bird so elusive that capturing its portrait feels like a triumph. Nearby, a flash of color betrays the presence of a Blue-faced Malkoha, its subtle blue and green hues blending with the canopy. Patient stalking through leaf litter and tangled vines leads to a sighting of the Puff-throated Babbler—always busy foraging, but momentarily pausing for a perfect shot.
The golden rays peeking through the trees have a magical quality, sometimes highlighting a Golden Oriole as it flits from branch to branch, its plumage aglow in the morning sun. River Terns patrol the skies above the stream, their calls a soundtrack to the expedition. Tickell’s Blue Flycatcher, vibrant and alert, often poses for a few seconds on low branches, making it a favorite photographic subject. Eventually, the unmistakable White-browed Wagtail arrives, gracefully hopping near the water’s edge.
Every trip to Valley School is unique—what remains constant is the thrill of discovery and the serene silence punctuated by birdsong. Sharing photographs from these expeditions brings back memories and inspires new journeys into this wondrous patch of Bangalore’s wilderness.
